High Park Zoo
The High Park Zoo dates back to the early 1900's when deer were kept inside the park. When the High Park Zoo's operating budget was removed from the City of Toronto's budget in 2012 residents came together to Save the Zoo. They needed to raise $228,000 per year to keep it open. The Toronto Parks and Trees Foundation allowed the Friends of High Park Zoo to provided tax receipts for all donations of $10 or more. Working together the Friends of High Park Zoo were able to raise $65,000 between March and the end of June 2012 to match the $50,000 funds offered by the Honey Family Foundation.
By the end of December 2013 with the help of TPTF the Friends had raised $342,000 which they paid to the City of Toronto to keep the zoo open until the City returned the operating cost to the budget in 2014. The Friends are continuing to work with TPTF to raise money for the zoo which is now going towards capital improvements. The Friends appreciate all the support from TPTF, The Honey Family Foundation, The Grenadier Group, Moses Znaimer, CUPE 79, The Griggs Family Foundation, the volunteers and all groups and residents who have made a donation to the High Park Zoo which opened in 1893.
